Dog feces has many negative impacts on the urban environment. Piles can cause insect infestation, bacteria and fungal growth, and spread disease if left to sit too long. Also, dog poop gets washed from these small urban green sites into public waterways causing contamination. According to the EPA a body of water is safe for human contact if it contains less than 200 fecal colonies per sample. One gram of dog poop alone carries an average of 20,000,000 fecal colonies. With the average observed single dog poop in downtown Knoxville residing in the 60-70 gram range it isn’t hard to calculate the problem.
